R&F Pigment Sticks and Drawing Oils

R&F Pigment Sticks and Drawing Oils

Artists using wax based materials for painting or drawing will find R&F pigment sticks and drawing oils to be an exciting and useful material. I’ve used them since my very first explorations with oil and cold wax for both drawing and painting. They are a beautiful enhancement to cold wax or encaustic as well as being a marvelous drawing or painting material in their own right.

I’ll demonstrate techniques for making base layers, for drawing and for painting with pigment sticks and drawing oils—separately or together. They may be used on prepared wood cradled boards, on Arches oil paper, or gessoed paper or simply, in the case of drawing oils, as a sketching material in sketch books. Colorful and vibrant, both sticks blend well, can be layered, combined with cold wax medium or simply used on their own. They are transportable and easy to take along as an oil medium when traveling. Transport, clean up and hand protection will be addressed as well.

Artist Bio

My current paintings and drawings are based on a series of events created by weather, light and space and the effects of lingering over small changes.  This work is necessarily abstract--layered and non linear. Subtle shifts in light and color, varying textures, shapes hidden, revealed and drawn surface lines combine to create a sense of dynamic space--a reflection of the generous and sometimes disturbing natural world.
