Encaustic Monotype
Encaustic Monotype
Explore the unique art of encaustic monotype printmaking in this engaging demonstration. Learn how to create one-of-a-kind prints by applying encaustic paint onto a heated surface using a hotbox and anodized aluminum plates.
We'll cover a variety of techniques, including building layered depth through multiple passes, using stencils and mark-making tools, and working with different types of paper to achieve diverse textures and translucency. We’ll also explore the fluid, expressive nature of heated wax and its remarkable ability to transfer luminous, gestural imagery to paper.
Whether you're new to encaustic or looking to expand your practice, this demo is designed to spark inspiration and reveal the many creative possibilities of this dynamic medium.
Artist Bio
Ruth Kedar is an artist and designer whose work explores the dynamic interplay between structure and spontaneity. With a background in architecture (B.Arch., Technion–Israel Institute of Technology) and her MFA from Stanford University, she brings a rich, multidisciplinary perspective to her practice.
As a designer, she is best known for creating the Google logo, and as a pioneer in digital art she co-founded one of the first online artist communities (Art.Net). She also taught at Stanford University for 11 years and led art workshops at the Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) and at Google.
In parallel, Ruth cultivated a vibrant art practice, building on formative years studying traditional monotype printmaking under the mentorship of Nathan Oliveira—an experience that deeply influenced and continues to shape her work today. Her monotypes, mixed-media, and digital pieces have been exhibited nationally and internationally.
Now working full-time as an artist, Ruth has embraced encaustic monotypes as her primary medium. Drawn to their layered luminosity and the productive tension between control and chance, she sees this process as a natural extension of her design sensibilities and long-standing passion for experimental, expressive techniques.
