Encaustic Sculpture

Saturday, August 29 & Sunday, August 30 from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm (2-Day Workshop)
Students will learn basic structural techniques for creating three-dimensional forms utilizing wire mesh, plaster gauze and encaustic medium. On day one, we will discuss line, mass, volume, surface, scale, display options, relief versus free-standing sculpture, and hanging devices. Helen will share examples of sculptures from various eras and artists, including the contemporary use of encaustic in sculpture.
No sculpture or encaustic experience is necessary; this workshop is appropriate for beginners through advanced artists. Don’t miss this wonderful, one-weekend-only opportunity to explore this medium with award-winning Chicago artist Helen Dannelly!
What to Bring: Long sleeves are recommended. Bring an apron or art shirt, work gloves, and pliers (or needle-nose pliers). If you have a heat gun, please bring it as well (some tools will be available to share).

About Helen:
I am interested in metamorphosis as a natural phenomenon as well as an interpersonal phenomenon. This interest is reflected in my work, whether in my paintings or abstract organic sculpture. My work is inspired by the natural world: light, shadow, color, plant life, sea life, water, earth, pods, seeds, cocoons, coral, sea anemones. Much of my currents work is done in plein air, inspired by my first trip to Claude Monet’s home and gardens in Giverny, France last year. I am a member of the Plein Air Painters Chicago.
